[Character POV: Martin]
It's pitch black in here. And of course the kitchen light is broken. Give me candles anyday.
I ease my way into the kitchen, trailing my fingers against the countertop edge to guide me. I've been in here enough times to know that there are candles in the cabinet on the opposite side of the room. Here in the dark, my reflexes and instincts all start going into fully alert mode. I've been in the dark many times before, and I'm completely comfortable. I just need a candle in order to make Luccia's tea.
Something brushes against my ankle, and I freeze. It was something alive, and I wasn't expecting to meet anyone down here in the middle of the night. But I hadn't felt like there was anyone near me, or anyone in the kitchen at all for that matter. I wait, silently, every sense alert for movement, sound, anything out of the ordinary.
There it is, a soft scraping noise. It's moving away from me, and out of habit I start to track it, following silently.
Another noise, this time much louder, it sounds like the scraping of a chair against the floor. Why is there absolutely no light in here? Is this a trap of some sort?
"There you are," a voice purrs, and now I can hear footsteps coming towards me. It was a nice even masculine voice, with no threat of violence or danger in it. What is going on here?
Decisions, decisions. I hadn't recognized that voice, so my choice is to either hide and wait or meet some one who I don't know about yet. Hmmm. But before I can make a conscious decision, it gets made for me. The person trips and comes sailing into me, with both of us sprawling on the kitchen floor.
"Ouch! I'm sorry, are you okay? Here, let me help you. Um, where are you?" The voice sounds concerned, so I sigh and accept the situation.
"I'm right here. I didn't mean to make you fall, are you hurt?" I grab the hand that has found my shoulder but all of a sudden something crawls onto my chest. I tense immediately, and only sheer discipline keeps me from making a completely un-dignified noise.
A match is struck somewhere near by, and now I can see the man standing in front of me as well as the reptile happily setting up house on my lap.
"What Is This... Thing?"
The match flares and goes out, but I still catch the gleam of white teeth as the man struggles not to laugh. I stand, holding the reptile in one hand as I brush off my clothes with the other. I now realize that this lizard was what had brushed against my ankle in the first place.
Another match flares, and I point the man towards the cabinet with the candles in it. As the light strenghtens and brightens slightly, I can finally take a good look at the person I'm talking to.
He's tall, with blond hair and a nice build. He looks like he hasn't had much sun in a while, because his skin is very pale, even in the flickering candlelight. He looks studious, not having very many laugh lines on his face. He's fairly young, too.
"Hi. My name's Adrian. You can hand me Wolfy now, I don't know how he got out..." As he reaches a hand towards me, I realize he wants the lizard (I think it's an iguana) I'm carrying. Well, I certainly don't want it, so I hand it over. It would only be a nuisance, anyway. Knowing Luccia, she'd want to keep it or some other such silliness.
"Hello, Adrian." I bow slightly, still not knowing his rank or position. I've never seen this person before. It's a disturbing thought to me, because I had thought that I would at least know all of the residents of this apartment complex by sight, if not name.
"My name is Martin, and I live on the third floor. May I help you with anything?"
He raises an eyebrow, then smiles at me. "I'm fine. I just wanted to catch Wolfgang (Wolfy for short) before he bothered anyone. I didn't even know he was out until I saw him in the hallway. Are you sure you're not hurt?"
"I'm fine. Where are you going to put him now? Do you have a cage for him?" I learned long ago that roundabout chit-chat got me more answers than direct questions, and it works now, too.
"Yes, as a matter of fact, I do have a cage for him up in my floor. I also wanted to make a snack for Lawrence but I think my hands are full." Adrian looks ruefully down at the iguana that is trying to crawl all over him.
Lawrence. That young man that lives on the same floor as Kaine and his band? Hmm. Interesting.
"Why don't I help you? I'll carry the food, and you can carry the lizard." He smiles at me, and before I know it, we're riding in the elevator, me with a tray of food and him with his pet.
The elevator doors open silently, and I step out, carefully balancing the tray of snacks as I wait for Adrian to open the door. In the hallway, I can see that there are two sections to this floor. Adrian veers off the the right, and I follow him.
