[Character POV: Adrian]
I motion for Martin to come into our section of the suite as I set Wolfy down in his cage. It feels so good to be out of that sanitarium block. I don't know how it happened, but after waking up this morning, I spent all day inside only to find out during the evening hours that the locks on my doors now don't latch. Even if someone were to lock me in, it would unlock itself in a matter of minutes. None of the nurses know, and god only knows what Yuki-sensei is trying to do. After all, she was the one who
made me go into therapy and locked me up in the first place.
Anyway, I'm just happy to be out. It doesn't matter how it happened.
Martin sets the tray down on a side table, then turns to look around the room. I don't think he's ever been here before. I've certainly never seen him. Of course, there's a lot of people I'll get to meet now. I've never been let out of the sanitarium since I arrived here, so finding the kitchen was fun. I had overheard enough to know it was on the ground floor, at least. The sound of Martin clearing his throat catches my attention again.
He's standing right in front of me, and he's holding something red. "Yes? What is it?"
"These are some letters that came today, and apparently whoever delivered them here just set them on the table. Have you read yours, yet, Mr. Adrian?"
It's just like being back in school, hearing him address me as such. A warm, happy feeling starts spreading inside me. It's nice to interact with people besides the sanitarium staff. And he's so polite, and helpful.
"No, I haven't. Who is it from?"
An odd look crosses his face, then a wry smile. "I would have thought it was obvious, seeing this envelope, but apparently not. This is a letter from Yuki-san. Here's yours, and there's also one for your friend, Lawrence. Why don't you give it to him when you take those snacks in?"
"What a thoughtful idea. I'll do that. Now, can I help
you with anything, since you've been so kind to me?"
The sound of a door opening interupts me, and we both turn to see Lawrence, dressed only in a loose nightshirt, standing there staring at us.
"Adrian? Is that you? What are you doing out here?" Confusion is evident on his face, so I hasten to assure him. Really, I don't want him worrying about me. He's been so supportive during my therapy, and he's the main reason that I've improved so much. Lawrence is the one who helped me slay my demons, and he banished my nightmares along with them.
"Lawrence, I'd like you to meet Martin. He lives on the third floor, and he serves the young Lord who lives there. I met him in the kitchen, and he helped me carry these snacks up here."
"The kitchen? How did you-" Lawrence breaks off and looks sharply at Martin, then comes over and joins us by the table. "Thank you for helping, Martin."
Martin smiles, with another wry twist to it. "Apparently, Lawrence, you haven't been getting checking your mail lately. This is a letter from Yuki-san, and I believe it will answer some of your questions. Please, go ahead and read it, and if you have any questions or concerns, I'd be happy to give them to Mr. Riff for you."
"Riff? What's he got to do with- Oh, never mind. If you'll excuse me for a minute, Martin." Lawrence fairly drags me off after taking the letter from Martin, who looks somewhat amused. As he reads the letter, Lawrence gets tense and starts to look slightly upset. I wonder what it says? Hmm, maybe I should read mine, too.
*Letter to Adrian*Congratulations, Adrian!!
Because you've done so well in therapy, I've disabled the sanitarium locks, and I'm giving you full permission to live in the main suite with Lawrence.
I've decided to take a year off, and I'm now traveling, doing all this boring author stuff that is sometimes required. So have fun, and I'll look forward to hearing about your adventures when I get back.
With Love, Yuki
PS: Please tell Lawrence to explain it to the sanitarium staff, would you? They won't be needed unless you have a severe setback, and I very much doubt that will happen.
*Letter to Lawrence*My dear, dear Lawrence,
As you may have noticed by now, I've turned off the locks in the sanitarium block. Adrian is free to live out in the main suite with you now. But this is on two conditions. You see, I've decided to take a break from writing, and I'm now traveling and doing shows for a year. The marketers won't leave me alone, so I've given in.
Don't start getting an attitude about it, either. I've left Riff in charge. (He's the butler on One, you've met him briefly before.) But he can't do it all by himself, so I'm expecting various others to help out. Eventually, he'll realize that he needs supervisors on each floor, and that's exactly what I want you to be. You get to be the lucky one who helps keep the peace on Floor #6.
Congratulations. Aren't you so happy to hear that?
Now, before you toss this letter in the trash (I know you too well, Lawrence) take a good look at Adrian's face. Because, if you
don't do this, he'll be locked up again in a heartbeat. I have ways, you
know I do. So be a good boy, okay?
That's condition #1. Also, Adrian has greatly improved, but as you are fully aware, there are still some kinks to be worked out. Which means you also have to keep an eye on him and keep him from killing anyone. That's condition #2. Just think back and remember how many people in this building match the description of the victims he goes for?
Well, with those comforting thoughts, I'll leave it to you to decide.
Have fun! Yuki
PS: The sanitarium staff no longer has control on when or how Adrian is contained. I've removed the switches in the sanitarium, as well. So it's all up to you now. Enjoy. Oh, and do introduce Adrian around to some of your friends. He hasn't been out of the sanitarium since he arrived, remember?
